Korea now ranks eighth globally in transport volume according to the International Air Transport Association. The statistics from Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport shows that the total air traffic in 2025 reached approximately 1.01 million flights, marking a 6.8% increase YoY and breaking the 1-million threshold for the first time, with a daily average of 2,778 flights. This figure exceeds the previous pre-pandemic record of 840,000 flights in 2019 by roughly 20%. The 2026 growth prospects shall be promising if this momentum is kept.

 

However, the Middle East conflict since 28 February 2026 has caused global travel disruptions, including widespread fuel supply shortages, changed transit flows, and flight cancellations. In response, South Korean airlines have cut flights, and introduced unpaid leave and other emergency measures as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has driven up fuel prices. Consequently, Incheon International Airport lowers the growth of annual passenger demand to be just 2% this year.

 

Looking ahead, the aviation industry in ROK is set for continued growth. According to Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook, South Korea’s passenger traffic is expected to rise by 3.7% annually over the next ten years, though challenges remain.
